❄️ Packing the Right Kit for Winter in the Mountains

By The Mountain Girl

Winter transforms the mountains into a wonderland—but with that beauty comes greater risk. Cold, snow, and shorter days mean that what you carry matters even more. Here’s how to pack for mountain adventures when the frost bites back.

🧤 Winter Essentials Checklist

🥾 1.

Insulated, Waterproof Footwear

  • Winter hiking boots with solid grip

  • Thermal socks (bring a spare pair)

🧥 2.

Cold-Weather Clothing System

  • Base: Merino or synthetic thermals

  • Mid: Insulated jacket or thick fleece

  • Outer: Waterproof & windproof shell

  • Down jacket for stops or emergencies

  • Wool hat, thermal gloves, neck gaiter or balaclava

Layering keeps you warm and allows for movement.

🔥 3.

Heat & Safety

Flask of coffee

  • Hand warmers

  • Insulated sitting pad or emergency bivvy

  • Thermos flask with hot drink

The goal: stay warm even during breaks.

🗺 4.

Navigation & Emergency Gear

  • Map + compass (winter routes may differ!)

  • Headtorch with spare batteries (dark comes early)

  • Avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel (if venturing into snowy terrain)

Know the terrain. Check weather and avalanche forecasts.

💨 5.

Food, Fuel, and Hydration

  • High-energy snacks (chocolate, nut butter, oat bars)

  • Hot drink + water (avoid freezing by insulating bottle)

You’ll burn more calories in cold weather—bring extra.

❄️ Final Thought:

Don’t just pack for comfort—pack for survival. Winter rewards the prepared and punishes the careless. Take pride in being ready. That’s where confidence grows.
